The West Highland town of Mallaig is an important herring port facing directly on to the Isle of Skye.  This busy rail and steamer terminal provides a link between the mainland and the Outer Isles.  Bonnie Prince Charlie landed here as a fugitive in 1746 before his final departure from Scotland.
