The whirlpool of Corrievreckan lies between the northern coast of the island of Jura and the island of Scarba, running in an east-west direction, two miles long and one mile wide. The noise of the whirlpool can be heard some ten miles distant and is caused by a ten-knot tide race converging on a pyramidal rock rising from 110 fathoms to within 15 feet of the surface. Corrievreckan, known locally as "The Cailleach" or hag, has claimed many vessels, and is considered unnavigable by the Royal Navy.
