The Lake of Menteith lies to the west of the village of Aberfoyle in south-west Perthshire. It is the only sizeable natural expanse of water in Scotland to be called a 'lake'. This misnomer may be attributed to either a bad translation of the Gaelic word 'lairg' or the Scots word 'laigh', both meaning 'plain'. The Lake is seen in this photograph in winter colour. The Lake of Menteith is the venue for Scotland's only outdoor curling 'bonspiel', which can not take place until the ice is at least ten inches thick. However, on the rare occasions when the ice is thick enough, it attracts thousands of players and spectators. |
