Surrounded by cliffs to the north and south, Stonehaven faces directly on to the North Sea, the two-basin harbour being seen in this photograph.  The new town lies to the north, and the old to the south.  Robert William Thomson, inventor of the pneumatic tyre, the fountain pen and the dry dock, was born in Stonehaven.
