Ruthven Barracks lie near Kingussie, which is said to be the "Capital of Badenoch". Built between 1716 and 1718, these barracks were strategically situated so as to keep the Highland clans in check. They were enlarged by General Wade in 1734. In 1746 after the Battle of Culloden the Highland clans assembled here in vain, awaiting Prince Charles, who never returned. This site was once occupied by a fortress belonging to the Wolf of Badenoch. There is a Highland Folk Museum in nearby Kingussie. |
