The area covered by this section lies between the Firth of Tay and the Moray Firth, and includes the Cairngorm Mountains.  It excludes the old counties of Caithness and Sutherland, which are included in our Northern section.  The lowlands and coastal fringes of this part of Scotland are extremely fertile, and the economy is greatly based on agriculture and fishing.  The western boundaries of this area are marked by the Cairngorm Mountains, whose peaks include some of the highest in Scotland.
