Strathclyde Park

Strathclyde Park

The low-lying valley of the Clyde between the Lanarkshire towns of Motherwell and Hamilton was utilised during the 1970s to provide Strathclyde Park.  The waters of the River Clyde were diverted to form Strathclyde Loch, which was used to accommodate the water events of the Commonwealth Games in the 1980s.  The former mining village of Bothwellhaugh lies beneath the waters of the loch, and nearby Bothwell Bridge was the site of the famous battle resulting in the defeat of the Covenanters in 1679.  Strathclyde Park is also the site of a Roman bath-house and bridge, both of which can still be seen.
