The Falkirk Millennium Wheel is the world's first rotating boatlift, opened in May 2002. Designed to connect the Forth & Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, it can carry eight or more boats at a time. Both canals are still in the process of regeneration after many years of disuse, although it is now possible to sail from the west coast to the east coast of Scotland. The Forth & Clyde Canal finally reopened in May 2001, having been closed by Parliament in 1963. This photograph shows the Millennium Wheel with the Visitor Centre in the immediate background. |
