The little town of Largs on the Clyde coast is still a firm favourite with Glasgow holidaymakers. Regattas are frequently held here since Cumbrae island provides shelter, and some of the finest sailing in Britain. King Haakon was defeated here in 1263 at the Battle of Largs, bringing Norse domination of Scotland to an end.
