The Forth and Clyde Canal, linking the east and west coasts of Scotland, was built by Thomas Smeaton in 1790, and enters the Clyde at Bowling. The Canal is 37 miles long, and was recently re-opened to pleasure craft. The Antonine Wall also has its western end here. The first practical steamboat, the "Charlotte Dundas", was tried out here in 1802. In 1812, Bell launched his famous "Comet" here. This photograph shows some of the small craft involved in the Canal's recent re-opening. |
