Ailsa Craig lies ten miles to the west of Girvan and is the core of an extinct volcano, rising to 1,114 feet above the Firth of Clyde. Its granite was once used for curling stones, and the island is home to more than 10,000 pairs of gannets, which breed there annually, and numerous other sea birds. Past tenants of the island are said to have paid their rents in gannet feathers. The island is around two miles wide, and is also known locally as "Paddy's Milestone", being a prominent landmark on the sea journey between Scotland and Northern Ireland. |
