St. Columba's Oratory, Glencolmcille

St. Columba's Oratory

Known as the Oratory of St. Columba, and lying below the mass of Glen Head, this little building has an altar to the north. A smooth stone within is said to have been the Saint's bed. To the south of the Oratory is the Pillar Stone, with a cross engraved. About a dozen of these stones stand throughout the glen, and are used by modern Christians as penitential stations. To the west, the cliffs of Glen Head fall 700 feet into the Atlantic.
