The name of these towers derives from Cape Martella in Corsica. Intended as observation posts in the event of a French invasion, many of these structures exist, both in Ireland and on the south and south east coasts of England. They were built in the early part of the Nineteenth Century, when the possibility of a Napoleonic invasion was reality.
