Donegal Castle, County Donegal

Donegal Castle

Donegal Castle was a stronghold of the O'Donnell family and dates from 1474. It was however considerably rebuilt by Sir Basil Brooke in the Jacobean period. It has a striking chimney piece in which the impalement of Leicester of Toft by Brooke is finely carved. The O'Donnells had a silver shrine made in the Eleventh Century for a psalter, allegedly written by St. Columba.
