Whithorn can be described as the cradle of Christianity in Scotland. Saint Ninian founded a monastery at Whithorn in 397 AD, which was probably the first Christian church in Scotland and known as the ‘Candida Casa’ or ‘White House’. Whithorn Priory was founded in 1186 by Fergus, Lord of Galloway, although excavations have revealed fragments of a pale plaster wall which may be Saint Ninian’s ‘Candida Casa’. There is a museum near the priory which exhibits some early Christian stones, the 5th Century ‘Latinus’ stone being possibly the oldest Christian stone in Scotland. For centuries Whithorn was a centre of pilgrimage for Scottish monarchs. |
