Isle of Whithorn Castle

Isle of Whithorn Castle, Galloway, holds the distinction of being one of the last tower houses to be built in Scotland. A panel dated 1674 has the initials of Patrick Houston and his wife Margaret Gordon inscribed. Sir John Reid, Superintendent of Customs, occupied the castle in the 1820’s, when the many inlets on the Solway Coast were frequented by smugglers. The castle is still occupied.
