This impressive 31-foot statue of Scotland’s national hero, William Wallace, stands on Bemersyde Hill in the Scottish Borders, overlooking Dryburgh, the burial place of Sir Walter Scott. It was commissioned by the Eleventh Earl of Buchan, sculpted by local sculptor, John Smith of Darnick and unveiled on 22nd September, 1814, the first statue of William Wallace to be erected in Scotland. The material is red sandstone and the statue was restored in 1991 by the Saltire Society. It stands in a beautiful location with breathtaking views across the River Tweed and the Roman fort of Trimontium towards the Eildon Hills.
