Traquair House, standing near Innerleithen on a tributary of the River Tweed, is possibly the oldest inhabited house in Scotland, with more than a thousand years of history attached. King William the Lion held court here in 1209, and 26 other Scots and English monarchs have subsequently visited the house. In 1746 the Earl of Traquair decreed that the main gates, known as the Bear Gates, should remain closed until a Stuart was once again on the throne. Traquair House was rebuilt in 1642, but the tower is of much earlier origin. There is a brew-house in the grounds which still produces its own beer. |
