Castle Tioram stands imposingly on a tidal island in the mouth of Loch Moidart, some three miles north of Acharacle. It dates from the 13th century, but was taken over in the 14th century by Amy MacRuary, first wife of John, 7th Lord of the Isles, after she had been cast aside so that her husband could marry Margaret, daughter of Robert II. The Clanranald division of MacDonald emanated from her. Recent proposals to restore this beautiful building for use as a residence have been impeded by those who would wish to have it preserved as a historical ruin. |
