Threave Castle

Threave Castle stands on an island on the Black Water of Dee near Castle Douglas. It was built by Archibald ‘The Grim’, 3rd Earl of Douglas between 1369 and 1390. William, 8th Earl of Douglas, captured MacLellan of Kirkcudbright by bribing a servant with a ladle full of gold. When the servant claimed his reward, Douglas melted the gold, poured it down the servant’s throat and hanged MacLellan against James II’s orders. In 1455 James laid siege and forced the surrender of Threave. In 164O, after a lengthy siege by Covenanters, Threave was reduced to a shell. It is now a national monument.
