Lying near the Ayrshire town of Maybole in the parish of Kirkoswald, Thomaston Castle was originally built in the 13th century, possibly by Thomas Bruce, a nephew of Robert the Bruce.  The present castle has its origins in the 16th century (circa 1507).  It originally had three storeys and a garret.  It is perhaps unfortunately overshadowed by neighbouring Culzean Castle, a Robert Adam structure of 1777, in adjoining Culzean Country Park.
