Tantallon Castle from the west

Tantallon Castle stands overlooking the North Sea east of the town of North Berwick, East Lothian. The castle dates from the mid-14th Century and has an extremely turbulent history. It may have been built by William, 1st Earl of Douglas, who was certainly the castle’s owner in 1374. Thereafter it passed to the ‘Red’ Douglases. It is recorded that Tantallon was besieged in 1491 and again in 1528 to little effect. It was re-fortified in the reign of James V, but was bombarded in 1651 by Cromwell’s General Monk, at which time it was occupied by a contingent of Moss Troopers. The remains of Tantallon in the present day are very much as General Monk left behind him.  Repair and reconstruction was underway when this photograph was taken.
