St. Andrews Castle

St. Andrews Castle, founded in 1200, stands on a rock overlooking the North Sea.  It was rebuilt in the 14th century, and Cardinal Beaton was murdered here in 1546.  To the south-east of the courtyard is an underground passage dug by a besieged garrison in 1546.  In 1547 the Castle was taken by the French fleet, and the prisoners, one of whom was John Knox, were transported to France.  There is a 24-foot deep bottle dungeon in the sea tower.
