Newark Castle, Selkirk

Newark Castle lies on the Yarrow Water some four miles from the Border town of Selkirk, in the grounds of the Buccleuch seat of Bowhill.  Archibald, Earl of Douglas replaced an "auld wark" with a "new wark" some time before 1423 and this became a royal hunting seat in Ettrick Forest.  It was visited by the poet William Wordsworth and his sister in 1814 and again in 1831 in the company of Sir Walter Scott.
