It was the ancient seat of the Clan Graham. Of the earlier structure, all that remains is one almost complete tower and the vaulted basement of another, both of which were probably the corners of the original castle. The possible original builder of Mugdock may have been Sir David de Graham who died circa 1396. It became the Clan seat of the Graham family in 1458, passing variously to the Marquess of Montrose and then to the Marquess of Argyll, after which it returned to the Grahams, who occupied it until the start of the 18th Century. John Guthrie Smith had the original castle linked to a large baronial mansion in 1875. The castle has now been partially restored |
