Moyle Castle

Moyle Castle

Moyle Castle overlooks the narrow strait of water which separates Skye from the Mainland.  Moyle Castle stands near the port of Kyleakin, named after the Norse King Haakon.  One of the ancient incumbents of the castle was known as "Saucy Mary", who ran a chain across the strait in an attempt to sink any ship which had not paid the toll.  In 1263 King Haakon sailed through these narrows on his way to the battle of Largs, where Norse domination ended after his defeat.
