David l built Melrose Abbey in 1136.  Like many Border abbeys, it has had many ravages inflicted upon it over the years, but particularly as a result of raids in 1543 and 1544.  The Abbey is a particularly beautiful place whose architecture represents the finest characteristics in the various stages of its construction.  The heart of King Robert the Bruce is buried under the east window of the chancel.  Melrose has many associations with Sir Walter Scott.
