Kilchurn Castle

Kilchurn Castle

The keep of Kilchurn Castle was built in 1440 by Sir Colin Campbell, the rest being constructed in 1693 by Ian, Earl of Breadalbane.  Occupied by the Breadalbanes until 1740, it was used by Hanoverian troops in 1746.  The castle previously stood on an island in Loch Awe, but the level of Loch Awe was altered in 1817, owing to the clearance of the outflow river at the Pass of Brander, a few miles west of this scene.
