Prince Charles Edward stayed in this town in 1745, and its ancient castle was once the residence of Scottish Kings, dating from the 12th century. The abbey at Jedburgh is perhaps the most impressive of the four great border abbeys, built circa 1118 by David 1st. In 1523, the Earl of Surrey ordered it to be burned, the abbey having been repeatedly damaged by the English during the middle ages. |
