Huntingtower Castle, on the outskirts of Perth, was the scene of the Raid Of Ruthven in 1582, when James VI of Scotland (James I of England), then 15 years old, was captured by several Protestant nobles, including the Earl of Ruthven, and held prisoner for ten months. Huntingtower is really two houses, but with the intervening space infilled. In 1670 it passed to Lord George Murray, a future Jacobite commander who was born there. There is some exceptionally fine painting on the plasterwork and timbered ceiling of the hall of the Eastern tower dating from about 1540, considered to be some of the earliest in existence. |
