Elgin Cathedral

Elgin Cathedral

Elgin Cathedral, "The Lantern of the North", was built in 1224 and is one of Scotland's finest ecclesiastical buildings.  The Cathedral and town were burnt in 1390 by the infamous Wolf of Badenoch, who was in fact the outlawed son of King Robert ll.  An ancient cross-slab lies in the choir, and is possibly of 6th century origin.  Although considerable parts of the original cathedral remain, much of the stone was removed over the years for local building.
