Eilean Donan Castle - sunset

Eilean Donan Castle

The original Eilean Donan Castle was built by Alexander II in 1220. It was originally totally surrounded by water, but is now joined to the mainland by a causeway. It passed to the Mackenzies of Kintail, who later became Earls of Seaforth. The Macrae family held the castle as hereditary constables for the Mackenzies, rebuilding the structure in 1932. It had been bombarded by the English frigate "Worcester". Nowadays it incorporates a war memorial and Clan Macrae museum. This sunset photograph shows the Red Cuillin of Skye in the background.
