The curtain wall of Dunvegan Castle was built around 1270 by Leod, son of a 13th century Manx king. The building was slowly added-to over the centuries, and is still the seat of the MacLeods of MacLeod. Relics contained within the castle include the great two-handed sword of William, the 7th chief, items relating to Bonnie Prince Charlie, an ancient Irish silver cup given to Rory Mor, the 11th cheif, and a fragment of silk - the famous "Fairy Flag", which, it is said, may have been the flag of Harald Haardrada of Norway. |
