Dunure Castle, Ayrshire, is mostly of 14th century origin and was an early Kennedy stronghold. It overlooks the fishing village of the same name on the Firth of Clyde. An ancient dovecote stands nearby. The Commendator of Crossraguel Abbey a few miles to the east was, on two occasions, almost roasted to death before finally surrendering his lands to the Earl of Cassillis in 1570. Evidently the Earl had few scruples in his methods of acquiring land.
