Dunstaffnage Castle lies three miles north of Oban at a strategic point where Loch Etive enters the Firth of Lorne. An important Campbell stronghold, the modern ruins date from the 13th century, although the greater part is probably from the 15th century. On the battlements a brass gun taken from a Spanish galleon wrecked in Tobermory Bay is preserved. Flora MacDonald was imprisoned in Dunstaffnage for ten days before she was taken to London in 1746. |
