Dunrobin Castle lies to the north east of Golspie on the east coast of Sutherland. A tower was built there in 1401 and was probably named after Robert (Robin) the 6th Earl of Sutherland. Dunrobin was transformed into a palace resembling a Loire Chateau in the mid 19th century. The Sutherland clearances did nothing to embellish the reputation of the family during the 19th century, and atrocities perpetrated by the infamous Patrick Sellar, their factor, on the common people are still remembered with extreme distaste. |
