Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle, dating from various periods in Scotland's history, stands on a highly defensive promontory to the south of Stonehaven, facing directly into the North Sea.  Originally the site of a church, the keep is early 15th century.  The castle stands impressively 160 feet above the sea, and was used to store the Scottish Crown Jewels during Cromwell's rampages.  The castle fell after an eight-month siege in 1652.  The oldest parts of the castle, the tower and the chapel, date from 1392, although legends abound of Pictish battles in the area of the modern castle.  The castle has been captured variously by William Wallace, and the English King Edward lll.
