Dunbar Castle

Dunbar Castle

Little remains of Dunbar Castle in the present day. It sits astride the harbour entrance of the East Lothian fishing port and popular holiday resort of Dunbar. In 1314 King Edward II fled here after the Battle of Bannockburn. In 1338 the castle was stormed by the Earls of Salisbury and Arundel, acting for the English King Edward III, when it was defended by Black Agnes, Countess of Dunbar, using a huge catapult. The castle was visited on two occasions following the murder of both of her husbands, by Mary, Queen of Scots, who was captured at nearby Carberry. The castle was later ordered to be destroyed in 1657.  This photograph shows the remains of the tower to the south of the block house.
