Duart Castle, Isle of Mull

Duart Castle

Duart Castle was first mentioned in 1390, and may have been built by Lachlan Lubanach Maclean.  The enceinte wall, however, is probably older.  The courtyard was rebuilt in 1683 by Sir Lachlan Maclean, who was created a Nova Scotia baronet.  Acquired in 1674 by the Earls of Argyll, it was garrisoned during the 1745 rebellion by government troops.  Reacquired in 1911 by Sir Fitzroy Maclean, it was subsequently restored, and is currently the home of the clan chief.
