Drumlanrig Castle

Drumlanrig Castle

Drumlanrig Castle was built in 1689 for William Douglas, First Duke of Queensberry. Defoe defined Drumlanrig as a ‘palace’. When the First Duke was presented with the bill for the castle’s construction it is recorded that he was so horrified at the expense that he  spent only one night there, returning to Sanquhar Castle. Bonnie Prince Charlie is alleged to have stayed there for one night in 1745. Ownership passed to the Dukes of Buccleuch, the current owners. An impressive collection of furniture and art treasures is permanently on display at Drumlanrig.
