Dirleton Castle stands in the centre of the East Lothian village of the same name. It was built in the 13th Century by the De Vaux family. In 1298 the castle was defended by William Wallace whilst under siege by Edward I of England, but was subsequently captured for Edward by the warlike Bishop of Durham. In 1650 Cromwell’s general, Lambert, pounded the castle into submission later hanging three leaders of the Moss Troopers from Dirleton’s walls. The castle is now an Ancient Monument surrounded by beautiful gardens and incorporating a 17th Century bowling green which is still in use. |
