Craignethan Castle, built in 1530 by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, was the last Medieval-style castle to be built in Scotland. The most outstanding feature is a defensive, vaulted gallery with loopholes known as a "caponier". Craignethan is beautifully situated above a gorge near the village of Crossford in South Lanarkshire, and was romanticised as "Tillietudlem Castle" in Sir Walter Scott's novel "Old Mortality". |
