Craigmillar Castle stands impressively on a commanding ridge to the south of Edinburgh. It was built about 1374 and was frequently used by royalty. James III imprisoned his brother, the Earl of Mar in one of Craigmillar’s cellars. The plans for the murder of Darnley, husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, were made here. Mary visited the area so often that the local village was known as ‘Little France’. |
