Clackmannan Tower

Clackmannan Tower

Clackmannan Tower, a Bruce stronghold, stands on a hilltop to the east of the old county town of Clackmannan. The land was granted to Robert Bruce, an illegitimate grandson of Robert I, in 1360. Originally one small, square tower, it was enlarged in the 15th Century by the addition of a taller, square tower. Various enlargements ensued over the years and the tower remained in the ownership of the Bruce family until 1772. The last resident was lady Catherine Bruce, widow of a Jacobite sympathiser, who had a reputation for “knighting” various favoured individuals with the “sword of Robert I”.
