Chatelherault was built in the 18th century as a hunting lodge and summer palace for the Dukes of Hamilton. Modelled on the French palace in the Duchy of Chatelherault, it completed the Grand Avenue, which stretched from Hamilton Palace. Hamilton Palace itself no longer exists, having suffered as a result of mine working in the area, and was demolished earlier this century. |
