Castle Menzies

Castle Menzies

Castle Menzies, standing a few miles to the west of the Perthshire town of Aberfeldy near the mouth of Glen Lyon, was formerly the seat of the chiefs of Clan Menzies.  The earlier clan seat, nearby Comrie Castle, was destroyed by fire in 1487.  The present castle was built in the 1570's, and is one of the best examples of an extended Z-plan castle.  Castle Menzies went through a number of extensions and it has changed hands several times in its more recent history.  It now belongs to the Clan Menzies Society.
