Carnasserie Castle stands about one mile north of the historic Argyllshire village of Kilmartin. It was built in 1565 on the site of an older castle by John Carswell, minister at Kilmartin. Carswell produced the first Gaelic translation of the Book of Common Order. The land was granted to him by the Duke of Argyll, and overlooks Crinan Moss. It was sacked in 1685 by MacLaine of Torloisk in Argyll's Rising. |
