Caerlaverock Castle, which was formerly a Maxwell stronghold, lies 7 miles south-east of the town of Dumfries in the Scottish Borders. The castle was first mentioned in 1220 and was stormed by the English King Edward in 1300. It dates mainly from the 15th Century and is triangular in shape with round towers. The castle surrendered to the Covenanters in 1638 after a 13 week siege. Around the same time the interior was reconstructed as a Renaissance mansion incorporated within the basic structure of the castle. The Maxwell family then moved to Terregles, Dumfries, and then later to Traquair House, Peebleshire. |
