Bonawe blast furnace, on
the southern shore of Loch Etive, was established between 1752/53, and
intermittent iron production continued until 1876. It has been described
as "The Longest-lived Blast Furnace in the Scottish Highlands".
The area was abundant in good quality wood for the manufacture of
charcoal. A visitor centre adjoins the site and is open to the public most
of the year. |
