Blair Castle

Blair Castle

Blair Castle, ancient seat of the Dukes of Atholl, stands in a strategic position in the village of Blair Atholl at the convergence point of a number of Perthshire glens.  The Duke of Atholl built a castle here in 1269, but it has been much altered over the years.  It was renovated in the Baronial style in the mid 18th century by David Bryce.  The oldest part of the castle is Cumming's Tower.  It was the last castle in Britain to withstand a siege when General Lord George Murray laid siege to it on behalf of Bonnie Prince Charlie.  The castle itself houses a number of Jacobite relics and there is a beautiful tapestry room.  The Duke of Atholl is the only private subject permitted to maintain a private army.
